UFO's (unfinished objects). Nearly all quilters have them. It's not at all unusual for someone to casually mention they have well over 100 UFO's. Of course I do know quilters who only have a few, though it's pretty rare to know a quilter who doesn't have any at all. We accumulate them in the process in learning new techniques or experimenting with color and/or patterns. We also tend to put things aside for "later" because we just can't wait to start the next new project!
Some of us are content just working on our UFO's as the mood strikes, a little here and a little there. Others get to the point we want them finished and out of our creative spaces... like yesterday! That's where I am now. Eager to finish things I've started and move on.
I've accumulated 25 unfinished projects. While some of my friends might shrug and ask "is that all?". That number makes me wince.
Starting in January 2021 my goal is to try and complete as many of those unfinished quilts as I can. The hardest ones to deal with are the disappointments in the pattern and color choices. Second hardest are those made with fabrics that no longer spark interest or creativity. There are always options:
- Just git 'er done!
- Make a smaller quilt than originally planned out of the pieces already stitched
- Salvage any usable pieces of fabric and ditch the piecing (chalk it up to a learning experience)
The quilt pictured isn't on my list of 25 but, it was a UFO and abandoned on my fabric shelf for years. I finished it today. I won't be making this pattern again but, I am happy to have it done before another Christmas passes by.
