In progress - UFO #4

The Stashbusters group's random UFO number draw for February was #4.  I'm working on it but, I got a slow start on it.  This was a "mystery by mail" offered by Glad Creations Quilt Shop in Minneapolis, MN  (they've since retired and closed shop).  I have several of their mystery quilts on my UFO list.

The thing about mystery quilts is you don't know whether you're going to like the quilt you're making.  You don't get to see what it's supposed to look like until the last "clue".  Here's a photo of the pattern revealed titled "Weather Vane".  It would have finished at 90" x 105".

I chose to purchase the batik colorway kit.  I had forgotten where I left off of why I never finished it.

When I opened the container I found I had only partially completed the blocks.  They're done now and here's what they look like in the fabric collection I received.

This shop's mystery quilts often include the instructions for assembling the sashing and/or pieced border pieces along with the blocks - you don't know it's border or sashing at the time though.

That makes it interesting and a lot harder to guess what the finished quilt is going to look like.

But, this is why I stopped working on it.  There wasn't any contrast in the fabrics and they just looked like mush (in my opinion).

Later, when I did see the reveal photo, I didn't like it any better.

My late start on the random draw was because I was trying to figure out how I wanted to finish this quilt and that took a while.

My version will be smaller than the original.  I'm using a piece of fabric from stash for the border with 12 blocks (rather than the original 20).

I'm taking the remaining 8 blocks apart because I needed more of the background pieces.  I've been wanting to try some Seminole piecing so that's what I'm working on for the sashing. Wish me luck!

While I do have one emptied bin now from storing the UFO, there are so many left over fabric strips that it doesn't like I've used anything up at all.

In the original quilt -- I like the border design but something about those white nine-patches in the sashing bothers me. I agree with your thoughts about the pastel colorway -- not enough contrast. I'll be interested to see what Seminole pattern you choose.
